Indonesia retains top spot in global Mobile Internet Advertising Index

Advertisers hold on to ROI in the face of ad inventory crunch

London 7th Oct., 2009 – Mobile media company, BuzzCity, today released its quarterly Mobile Internet Advertising Index for 2009. The Index represents inventory sold across the BuzzCity Mobile Advertising Network in more than 200 countries globally and documents advertiser demand for mobile internet advertising in these markets.

In the third quarter of 2009, more than 5.4 billion advertiser banners were delivered across the entire network. This represents a Q-on-Q decline of 29%. Twelve of the top 20 countries showed a decline (negative growth) which overshadowed the growth in other markets. Among the Top 5 markets, Indonesia, India, United States and South Africa remained unchanged in ranking. Kenya enjoyed 52% growth and replaced United Kingdom in 5th place.

The following table shows the top 10 countries by the number of paid advertising banners delivered in each (compared to Q2 2009 results):

  1. Indonesia: 1.8 billion    (-52%)
  2. India:   899 million (-16%)
  3. United States:  378 million (-22%)
  4. South Africa:  324 million (-30%)
  5. Kenya: 140 million (52%)

  9. Malaysia: 92 million (13%)
  10. Saudi Arabia: 87 million (-6%)

The third quarter global ad rates increased by 10% in July followed by another 21% in August 09, forcing many advertisers to review placements even as they planned campaigns for the remainder of the year. In September 09 prices dropped 2% and realigned campaigns to levels of manageable ROI’s. “Advertisers everywhere are sensitive to the ROI on their ad campaigns and scale back spending when prices go up. Although consumer surfing activity has increased, it may not be reflected in ads served. “said KF Lai, CEO, BuzzCity.

BuzzCity has recently released a feature on their ad server that measures these conversions to help advertisers identify how effective their ads are performing. Advertisers can compare the performance of each ad and selected landing pages, then optimize them for best conversion. The BuzzCity adserver then uses the information to improve ad scheduling so that ads will appear on best performing publishers. With this tool advertisers secure better ROI while publishers are assured fair returns on their inventory.
